Sometimes we practice so late during marching band season that we outlast the sun. What happens then? Well, you either move to a place with lights, bring your own, or just call it a night. Of course, no band director would ever shorten practice in the middle of competition season if there was any other way, so we had to get our own light.
We tried renting lights, but those were expensive, bulky, and hardly lit up the back of the field at all. So we journeyed from the football fields to the soccer field on the north side of campus. That was already wired for full coverage light, however the school was nervous about letting us use it.
We used to use the soccer field for practice for thus very reason, however apparently our marching tears up the field and the soccer players complain about it( and feel free to leave comments if you know other reasons why) : the soccer players use the field in the spring and summer, and we use it in the fall. The grass is going to die in between our use and your next use anyway. Doesn't the boy's cross country teams tear up the field doing their warm up sprints as much, if not more than us marchers do? Why aren't we kicked off of the football field for tearing it up?
During break time we analyzed this: since this soccer field is home field for our varsity soccer teams, they obviously want to keep it looking nice. The football field we play on is for practice and freshman games, so it doesn't have to look as good (sorry guys ).
We may not get to stay there forever, however it is nice being able to actually see where we are marching now.
